Sir:

Will you be so kind as to have me informed when the next meeting of the board for the examination of candidates for admission to the Medical Staff of the Army, takes place; or if two are appointed, at what times; and places, they will be held. It is my intention to apply for permission to present myself as a candidate, and my conduct will be influenced by the knowledge I now seek.

I learn from a copy of the "Directions" that my application must be accompanied by suitable testimonials as to my moral and physical capacities. Would the reccommendation of the Member of Congress from this district be regarded as sufficient or will additional signatures be required?

You will pardon me for troubling you with these queries. They are, to me, of some importance, and I know of no other quarter, to which to address them.

I remain Sir:
with much respect,
Your Obdt Servt
Albert J. Myer

Hon Charles M. Conrad
Secretary of War
Washington. D.C.

Sir:

Circumstances, entirely unforseen at the date of my application, will, probably, render it impossible for me to present myself before the Army Board of Medical Examiners at its next session.

I desire, therefore, that the application be considered as, for the present, withdrawn. It is my intention to persue the request, so soon as I shall feel myself warrented in doing so.

Allow me to tender my thanks for the prompt attention which my previous communications have received.

I remain, Sir, with much respect

Bvt Brig Gen Th. Lawson
Surgeon General U. S. Army
Washington. D.C.

Sir:

On the Twenty-fifth of August, I applied for permission to appear before the next Army Medical Board, as a candidate for admission into the Medical Staff of the Army. A few days after, I was informed that I would receive an invitation.

In the early part of September, I became ill; and on the 10th of that month, I addressed a letter to the Secretary of War, withdrawing my application, "for the present," signifying, however, my intention to renew it at the earliset opprortunity. In this letter, I must have expressed myself so poorly as to have been misunderstood; for, a short time since, I received the regular notice from the Secretary of War, permitting me to present myself for examination by the board now in session. I have not yet fully recovered my health, and, in consequence, have been unable to attend. I have written to Surgeon Thomas G. Mower, Presedent of the Board, stating the reason of my absence, and was informed that, in order to secure the privilege of appearing at another time, I must address my request to you.

I request, therefore, that my name be continued on the list of Candidates for examination by a future Board.

I have the honor to be, very repectfully,
Your Obedt. Servt.

Bvt Brigadier General Th. Lawson
Surgeon General U. S. Army
Washington. D.C.

General:

I have the honor to report that having leave of absence from Colonel Ambercrombie for the purpose of arranging some business prior to my departure for Texas, I arrived in this city on Oct. 14th. My Post Office address is still Fort Columbus, N.Y. There are in charge of the Medical Surgeon at New York, Surgeon Salterlee, to [two] cases of intruments originally intended for and I believe styled Field Cases. They contain saw, trocar, catheters &c. with scalpels, instruments sufficient for any ordinary operation. They have been for some years in the store room at the Department. Surgeon Salterlee informs me that they differ from those ordinarily issued but that with your permission there can be no impropriety in my having one of them. I have to request that I may be allowed to take charge of one of them in lieu of such instruments as it will enable me to disperise with. It is my wish if I obtain your permission to retain permanent posession of the case and I will hold myself responsible at anytime for the perfect condition of both it and its contents.
